• Helen Cherry

Helen Cherry is a graduate from the University of Cambridge. As well as her MA (Cantab) in Philosophy, she holds a Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults and certificates in counselling skills, coaching skills and Mental Health First Aid.

Helen has 20 years of experience in education, and has held positions in teaching English as a Foreign Language, Cambridge accredited teacher trainer (on both CELTA and Distance DELTA courses) and several years’ experience in senior education management.

Arguably, Helen’s interest in intercultural communication and language learning stems from attending a French nursery school in Baghdad, Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war. Since then, she has travelled to more than 40 countries for work, study and pleasure. She has worked in Italy, Poland, Slovenia, France, Germany, Portugal and Japan as a teacher (English and French) or as a Teacher Trainer. She is invited annually to prepare Eastern European Catholic (arch)bishops for the United States Catholic Bishop Conference on Catholic Social Doctrine in Poland, which allows her to put her degree to use.2017 also saw her giving presentation skills training in Malaysia, and in leadership skills, EQ and coaching skills in Kuwait.

Helen’s particular areas of interests include teacher training, mental health, neurodiversity, disability awareness and Human Rights. Helen’s voluntary work in these fields include three years working at a nightline, several years working with children and adults with SpLD, working with refugees in her hometown. She also spent some time in the infamous Calais “Jungle” refugee camp, initially intending to help in the Calaid warehouse. However, she quickly identified that her first aid and counselling skills were in greater need. She is still in contact with many of the friends she made in the camp.

Helen is fortunate to live and work in York (recently named by the Sunday Times as the best place to live in Britain) where she works as the Academic Manager at York Associates. Courses she delivered in her hometown last year include professional English, international communication training and teacher training (Erasmus +) courses. In her spare time, she employs conflict resolution tactics with her two cats.
